DBA crews recently completed some drainage improvements in the Town of Superior for Pinal County Public Works.
The work, completed using DBA’s Job Order Contract with the County, included the replacement of pavements, reconstruction of driveways, the addition of sidewalks and valley gutters for improved drainage along Church Avenue and Copper Mountain Drive at the east end of town.
Summer monsoons and winter rain storms have laid waste to some of the private properties along the southern end of the Gila River Indian Community near the Vee Quiva Casino. A long term solution was required which came in the form of multiple, very large retention basins placed around the toe of the hillside. Extensive earthwork along with the construction of 41 cast-in-place, concrete inlet-outlet structures, spillways and a large multi-barrel box culvert.
DBA was responsible for all of the structural concrete work on the project which was recently completed.
Working along Johnson Road (west of Sun Valley Parkway north of Interstate 10), DBA crews are excavating along the roadway, installing elliptical pipe sections, and building connections to pipe with cast-in-place concrete inlet/outlet structures at two intersections to convey storm water. The two intersections (Portland and Bellview Streets) have become inundated during heavy storms, making ingress/egress to the neighborhood hazardous and a nuisance for local residents.
Once complete, the new structures and pipe will connect to an existing drainage ditch running along Johnson Road on the east side. The project is being completed for Maricopa County Department of Transportation.
DBA submitted a bid to ADOT for the demolition and reconstruction of two bridges in Yuma County over the Mohawk Canal. Located off the ADOT highway system on Avenue 37E and Yuma County’s 6th Street is one bridge. The other bridge is located on Avenue 46E and Yuma County’s 1-1/2 Street. Both bridges require the removal and replacement of the bridge girders, removal and replacement of the bridge railing/barriers, construction of new bridge abutments, removal and replacement of the asphaltic concrete pavements on the deck and additional 50-foot approach slabs will be constructed.
DBA crews started on the project in late August and expect to be complete by the end of 2019. The bridge construction is directly over an irrigation canal that is used for the agricultural community in Wellton. As a result, extensive measures have been taken to protect the water from construction debris and chemical intrusion.
Following on the footsteps of our successfully completed project for Salt River Project (SRP) at Mormon Flat Dam, DBA is under construction at another rockfall mitigation project at Horse Mesa Dam. The new project entitled, “Horse Mesa Dam Stabilization of Rock-Face at Water Line is one of the most complex projects we have undertaken for the Arizona utility. The contracts includes work at three separate locations for a total constructed value of nearly $2 million. It requires rock scaling and construction of a large retaining wall. The two other parts of the project include drainage improvements and the replacement of an existing wooden wall with a concrete wall above the dam access roadway. When complete, this will be DBA’s 10 project for SRP.
Awarded in August, 2017, the Queen Valley Flood Mitigation Project Phase II involved the replacement of an existing pipe culvert under Sharon Drive at Queen Creek with a multi-barrel, cast-in-place box culvert. The project was necessary because of erosion damage and scour conditions under the roadway after a summer monsoon. In addition to constructing the new drainage structure, DBA was tasked with providing gabions along the banks leading up to the downstream culvert, repaving the roadway, striping, and general earthwork on both sides of the structure. The project finished on time and within the original budget.
“Construction on the Queen Valley project went smoothly and DBA stepped up to the plate to get the work done efficiently and without any setbacks. Through this project, we’ve developed a great working relationship with DBA and have the utmost trust and confidence in them. We would be happy to use DBA again for future projects.”

DBA crews recently completed the MC-85 – South Extension Canal Lining for the Buckeye Water Conservation and Drainage District in Buckeye, Arizona.
The project was to excavate a section of the drainage/irrigation channel along the South Extension Canal, place geogrid and aggregate base, demolish and remove existing drainage structures, place shotcrete lining with fibrous reinforcement and other miscellaneous work for a total of 2,925 SY of new channel. The canal is located between Jackrabbit Trail and Perryville Road.
In order to meet the client’s dry-up schedule, DBA crews worked 6 days a week and 10-hour days.
