Surprise, Arizona – DBA was the successful bidder on the project which included all of the traffic control, public notifications, bridge deck joint demolition and reconstruction, and spall repairs along the existing bridge deck and restriping.
DBA worked closely with the City of Surprise and the lead designer (Carter-Burgess now Jacobs) during the scoping phase of the project in order to decrease the project schedule from four weeks to a working timeframe of two weekends. This schedule compression was a win-win situation for all parties involved as it decreased traffic control impacts to the traveling public and also condensed the traffic control requirements.
DBA’s work scope included obtaining all necessary permits and clearances, managing and scheduling subcontractor trades (traffic control and striping), and acquiring and scheduling all material deliveries over a fast-track turnaround schedule.
As the project progressed, DBA worked with the City and the lead designers to add a bridge deck seal in the form of a 3-part methacrylate application to give the bridge deck a longer life and protect against future rebar corrosion. In order to complete this added scope, DBA was able to reduce the schedule for other work items through improved productivity rates and phasing so that the original schedule was not impacted. The work was performed over two weekends with round-the-clock shifts and high early strength concrete so the bridge would be open for the Monday morning commute. Over each weekend, DBA was able to remove and replace 144 LF of bridge deck joint, as well as the extensions up into the adjacent concrete barriers.
