Still Going Strong

06 Apr 2020/in Governmental Agencies, Latest News and Information, Uncategorized /by Jeanne Sapon

Transportation is paramount to keeping our economy going and major truck routes, like Interstate 40, play a large role in getting much needed supplies and food to those in need. Keeping our highways and bridges safe during these trying times is essential and DBA crews are doing their part.

Working on the I-40 Bridges over the Little Colorado River (eastbound and westbound) near Winslow, required repair of spalls and cracks, retrofitting piers with CFRP (carbon-fiber wrapping), replacing bearing pads, replacing deck joint assemblies and applying crack sealant on deck surfaces.

The project started in late February, we have completed the first phase of replacing the deck joints.

  • Applying Epoxy sealants to the decks
  • Installing fence
  • Placing rip-rap for erosion protection
  • Replacing sound barrier and installing access barriers between girders for maintenance

Our scope of work included: 1) Complete reconstruction of the site retention basin; 2) Pavement rehabilitation and replacements in sections both AC and PCCP; 3) Construction of shade canopies at the Tire Shop; Installation of a new lighting package; removal and replacement of on-site chain link fencing; and complete microsealing of all parking areas.

DBA Responds to Emergency Repairs in Chandler

25 Sep 2019/in Governmental Agencies, Latest News and Information, Uncategorized /by Jeanne Sapon

DBA crews recently responded to an emergency request for the construction of four catch basins on the west side of Arizona Avenue at Chicago Street, as well as new construction of ADA ramps, sidewalk, curb & gutter, the placement of PCC paving, and tie-ins to existing piping on the east side of Arizona Avenue directly adjacent to City Hall.

Both projects were completed by DBA who responded quickly to a special request that allowed the remaining portion of the infrastructure contract for the new parking garage to continue without delay or further disruption. Extensive underground utilities had been discovered and disturbed prior to DBA’s arrival on scene. This added to the project’s complexity and required fast thinking in the field to quickly resolve the issues and reestablish utility connectivity. The special request came from another prime contractor who had released his civil subcontractor from the project due to performance issues.

Access Road Gets Safety Improvements

20 Sep 2019/in Latest News and Information, Power Generation and Transmission, Uncategorized /by Jeanne Sapon

DBA recently completed another access roadway improvement project for Salt River Project at Horse Mesa Dam.  Along the steep, winding narrow access road from Apache Trail down to the dam, there are a total of 6 switchback areas that had become unsafe for driving (particularly in the early morning hours).  DBA was contracted by the utility company to improve one of the worst corners by building a retaining/curb wall, an anchored and rebar reinforced turndown, and improved driving surfaces that were rebar reinforced and tined for better traction.  The project also called for the installation of additional CMP under the roadway and the construction of two modified concrete headwalls for improved drainage.

Adding to the complex project in an extremely remote area of Maricopa County, was the delivery of concrete to the site. Due in part to the steepness of the access road and the tight turns, concrete mixer trucks could only haul 6 CY per load. The entire project required a total of 160 CY. As A result, the project was completed in four weeks.

Wellton-Mohawk Bridges Moving Ahead

04 Sep 2019/in Governmental Agencies, Irrigation and Flood Control, Latest News and Information, Uncategorized /by Jeanne Sapon

DBA submitted a bid to ADOT for the demolition and reconstruction of two bridges in Yuma County over the Mohawk Canal. Located off the ADOT highway system on Avenue 37E and Yuma County’s 6th Street is one bridge. The other bridge is located on Avenue 46E and Yuma County’s 1-1/2 Street. Both bridges require the removal and replacement of the bridge girders, removal and replacement of the bridge railing/barriers, construction of new bridge abutments, removal and replacement of the asphaltic concrete pavements on the deck and additional 50-foot approach slabs will be constructed.

DBA crews started on the project in late August and expect to be complete by the end of 2019. The bridge construction is directly over an irrigation canal that is used for the agricultural community in Wellton. As a result, extensive measures have been taken to protect the water from construction debris and chemical intrusion.
